Crime on the rise in New York: What's the latest in the trend? - May ’26

The number of crime incidents in New York saw an overall increase last month, after a previous decrease, according to data from CrimeoMeter. Incidents increased to 33,799 for May-2026 up from 32,164 for Apr-2026 (+5.1% change).



Among the types of offenses that saw an uptick last month, reports of Aggravated Assault of went from 567 to 626 incidents (+10.4% change). Incidents of Shoplifting rose from 201 to 254 incidents (+26.4% change). Robbery went up from 2,008 to 2,252 incidents (+12.2% change).
